GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
The Gap, Inc. (Gap) is a retailer of clothing, accessories and personal care products for adults, kids and babies through over 3,076 stores in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Japan, Germany, Ireland and France, including about 1,100 Gap stores in North America. It has more than 100 Gap and Banana Republic stores through franchise agreements in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. The Gap brand includes GapKids, babyGap, GapBody and Gap Outlet, as well as Banana Republic and Old Navy. Gap stores typically embrace all Gap-branded units, such as Gap, babyGap and GapKids under one roof but segregate them into different areas, each with its own street/mall entrance. The firm also sells its products via Gap.com, BananaRepublic.com and OldNavy.com. Gap has two online-only brands: Athleta, which sells women’s exercise and casual apparel, footwear and accessories; and Piperlime, which sells apparel, footwear and handbags for women, men and kids. Gap stores sell classically styled, high-quality casual apparel. Old Navy operates stores in the U.S and Canada and offers a broad selection of apparel, shoes and accessories for adults, children and infants at more affordable prices. Banana Republic has locations in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Japan; and sells men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, personal care products, intimate apparel and jewelry to a higher price-point market. In late 2011, Gap, Inc. announced a major cutback. By the end of 2013, it plans to shrink its North American store base by nearly 200 units. Meanwhile, it hopes to expand in emerging nations such as China where it already has a minor presence. Gap offers its employees benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance; life, disability, accidental death and dismemberment and business travel accident insurance; an employee assistance program; travel, moving and relocation assistance; and a 401(k) plan.
