GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
ABB, Ltd. is a global leader in power and automation technologies for utility and industrial companies. The company provides a broad range of products, systems and services that improve power grid reliability, increase industrial productivity and enhance energy efficiency. The firm operates in approximately 100 countries, and divides its business into five divisions: power products; power systems; low voltage products; discrete automation and motion; and process automation. The power products segment manufactures and sells high to medium voltage switchgear and apparatus, circuit breakers for various current and voltage levels and power and distribution transformers. The power systems division’s applications include engineering of grid systems, power generation systems, network management and substations. Operations of the low voltage products unit include businesses producing low-voltage electrical equipment sold on the wholesale and original equipment manufacturers markets. The discrete automation and motion segment includes products and systems targeted at discrete manufacturing applications, such as robotics and programmable logic controllers, and providing motion in plants, such as motors and drives. This segment incorporates the former operations of the robotics division. The process automation segment offers plant automation and electrification, energy management, process and asset optimization, analytical measurement and telecommunications for such industries as metals and minerals; pharmaceuticals; oil and gas; pulp and paper; chemicals; and petrochemicals. Subsidiaries of the company include ABB (India) Ltd., ABB (Thailand) Ltd. and Ventyx, Inc., a leading software provider to the global energy, utility and communications industries. In 2011, the firm acquired Trasfor Group, which produces inductors and dry-type transformers; Lorentzen & Wettre, a subsidiary of ASSA ABLOY AB, which creates quality control and test instrumentation products for the pulp and paper industry; and Epyon B.V., a developer of network charger software and direct current fast-charging stations. In January 2012, the company agreed to acquire Thomas & Betts Corp. for $4 billion.
