| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | | Veeco Instruments, Inc. designs, manufactures, markets and services process equipment and metrology instrumentation equipment. These lines of equipment are used by manufacturers in the data storage, research and industrial, semiconductor, HB-LED (high brightness light emitting diode) and wireless industries. The company’s products feature cutting edge technology and allow customers to improve time-to-market of next generation products, as well as enabling advancements in the growing fields of nanoscience, nanobiology and other areas of scientific and industrial research. Veeco has three primary business segments: data storage process equipment; LED and solar process equipment; and metrology. The data storage process equipment segment includes etch, deposition, dicing and slicing products sold mostly to manufacturers of hard disk drives. The LED and Solar process segment consists of the company’s MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) and MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition) products, sold primarily to manufacturers of HB-LED and wireless telecommunications devices. Veeco’s metrology equipment is used to provide surface measurements on semiconductor devices and thin film magnetic heads, allowing customers to monitor their products throughout the manufacturing process in order to improve yields, reduce costs and improve product quality. These metrology instruments are used by universities, scientific laboratories and industrial applications. The company sells its line of atomic force microscopes, optical interferometers and stylus profilers to research facilities and scientific centers worldwide. Veeco’s manufacturing and engineering facilities are located in New York, New Jersey, California, Colorado, Arizona and Minnesota. The company also has sales and services offices located through the U.S., Europe, Japan and Asia Pacific. In May 2008, the firm acquired Mill Lane Engineering, a manufacturer of web coating systems for flexible solar panels for $11 million. It has subsequently been renamed Veeco Solar Equipment, Inc. In June 2008, Vecco launched HarmoniX, an atomic force microscope for nanoscale imaging functions. |
