Merrill Lynch has a presence in 37 countries and territories, with major geographic regions of operations in the U.S.; Europe, the Middle East and Africa; the Pacific Rim; Canada; and Latin America. As an investment bank, the company is a global trader and underwriter of securities and derivatives across a broad range of asset classes and serves as a strategic advisor to corporations, governments, institutions and individuals worldwide. The firm operates in two segments: global markets and investment banking (GMI); and global wealth management (GWM). The GMI segment, which accounted for 57% of revenue in 2006, provides trading, capital markets services, investment banking and advisory services to corporations, financial institutions, institutional investors and governments around the world. GMI also provides clients with financing, securities clearing, settlement and custody services and also engages in principal and private equity investing. The segment’s investment banking division provides securities origination and strategic advisory services for issuer clients, including underwriting and placement of public and private equity, debt and related securities, as well as lending and other financing activities for clients globally. The GWM segment, 37% of 2006 revenue, provides brokerage, investment advisory and financial planning services, offering both proprietary and third-party wealth management products and services globally to individuals, small- to mid-size businesses and employee benefit plans. Merrill Lynch also provides research services on a global basis through its Global Securities & Economics Group. The company owns a 45% voting interest and about half of the economic interest in BlackRock, Inc., an investment management company with roughly $1.1 trillion in assets under management. In September 2006, the company completed the merger of its investment management business with BlackRock, Inc., creating an independent investment management firm. |
