| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | Abbott Laboratories develops, manufactures and sells health care products and technologies ranging from pharmaceuticals to medical devices. The firm markets its products in more than 130 countries. The pharmaceutical segment deals with adult and pediatric conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, epilepsy and manic depression. The diagnostic instruments and test segment deals with a range of medical tests to diagnose infectious diseases, cancer, diabetes and genetic conditions. Products include Humira for arthritis, Prevacid (Ogastro), a proton pump inhibitor for the short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and Lupix for prostate cancer. The nutritional products segment offers consumer products such as Similac, Ensure, Glucerna and AdvantEdge, as well as medical nutritional products and feeding devices. The diagnostic products segment includes diagnostic systems and tests such as immunoassay, chemistry and hematology systems, which are manufactured, marketed and sold to blood banks, hospitals, commercial laboratories, physicians’ offices and plasma protein therapeutic companies. The vascular products segment consists of coronary, endovascular and vessel closure devices, used in the treatment of vascular disease. These products are generally marketed and sold directly to hospitals from Abbot-owned distribution centers and public warehouses. The firm also produces a line of animal products such as anesthetics, wound care products and intravenous fluid therapy for the veterinary market. The company operates internationally in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin and South America and the Middle East. In December 2008, Abbott received FDA approval for Trilipix, a cholesterol management medication. In February 2009, the company acquired Advanced Medical Optics which has since been renamed Abbott Medical Optics Inc. In September of the same year, the firm agreed to acquire the pharmaceutical unit of Belgian company, Solvay SA for $7 billion.
